Advanced Magnet Lab (AML) has developed a concept for stopping underwater oil spills or leaks with the help of magnetized particles. With the very high remanent fields of modern permanent magnet materials, like NdFeB, Alnico and others, such particles form extremely tight bonds without becoming “form-stable”, i.e., an assembly of such material can form a heavy “blanket” or a flexible plug, which strongly adheres to any steel in its vicinity. The magnetic particles in such an assembly will only separate under the influence of very large forces even when immersed in water or other liquids.

White Paper

A detailed description of the processes and expected results are detailed in a white paper written by Dr. Rainer Meinke, chief scientist at AML.

Successful Oil Spill Solution Test

AML successfully performed a test of the oil spill solution on a scaled down version of the actual equipment down in the gulf. A test report and video have been produced which outline the results of the test.
