With DDH, the 3-dimensional shape of the conductor is completely under control of the magnet designer. The aspect ratio and cross-section of the conductor can be varied at any point along its path. By increasing the effective cross-sectional area of the conductor, resistance is lowered and consequently the magnet is able attain higher current density as compared to its wired counterpart.

In addition to having a lower effective resistance, DDH provides opportunities to apply external cooling techniques with very efficient heat transfer. Effective, active removal of heat further contributes to the ability of DDH to carry higher currents, resulting in higher fields.
