Double-Helix™ magnets are mechanically robust and stable…

The tilted, helical positioning of the current conductor with Double-Helix™ allows for the creation of very robust composite assemblies with no limits to the number of conductor layers. A robust structure consisting of alternating layers of conductor and composite material, results in a coil that is truly self-supporting, not requiring any other structural substrate.

A closer look at a typical DH magnet cross section reveals the fact that conductors are securely located in very precise grooves, machined in the composite substrate. The grooves in a multi-layered substrate serve a number of very unique functions:

  • Define the physical path of the precisely calculated destination of the conductor in 3 dimensions.
  • Provide complete mechanical stability of the conductor under tensile or compressive force conditions.
  • Provide for placement of the conductor through an automated manufacturing process with no inserts or tooling.
  • Allow for unlimited stacking of layers with each layer being independent, i.e. each layer can have a different conductor path in than its predecessor.
  • Minimize the risk of electrical shorts.

Double-Helix™ also provides for the manufacture of splice-free windings. The conductor can be transferred from layer to layer, in any length, as one continuous winding.
